Practical strategies for caregivers of someone with a psychiatric condition to manage stress and prevent caregiver burnout.

Common caregiver challenges

  • Chronic stress and exhaustion from ongoing responsibility
  • Grief for the relationship or future you expected
  • Guilt about needing a break, or about feeling frustrated
  • Social isolation as caregiving responsibilities grow
  • Financial strain from treatment costs or reduced work hours

Self-care strategies

  • Schedule regular breaks, even short ones, without guilt
  • Maintain your own sleep, meals and physical activity as much as possible
  • Stay connected with friends and your own support network
  • Consider your own counselling or a caregiver support group
  • Set realistic expectations — you cannot control the illness, only how you respond to it

Building a support network

Caregiving is not meant to be done alone. Share responsibilities with other family members where possible, look into local or online caregiver support groups, and don't hesitate to ask for practical help (meals, errands, respite time) from people who offer it.

When caregiver stress becomes a health concern

Persistent low mood, exhaustion that doesn't improve with rest, loss of interest in your own life, or thoughts of hopelessness are signs that your own mental health needs attention too. Caregivers are not immune to depression and anxiety, and seeking your own support is not a sign of failure.

When to seek urgent help

If you are experiencing thoughts of self-harm, or feel unable to safely continue caregiving, reach out for professional support immediately — for yourself as well as the person you're caring for.
