Read the medical information disclaimerI feel anxious all the time — is it anxiety disorder?
Many people search for an anxiety doctor in Nepal after weeks of constant worry, poor sleep, a racing heart, overthinking or a feeling that something bad is about to happen. Anxiety is a normal alarm response, but it may be an anxiety disorder when worry is hard to control, lasts for much of the day, or begins to affect work, study, relationships, sleep or everyday decisions.
Anxiety does not always feel like fear. Some people notice headaches, stomach discomfort, muscle tension, tiredness, irritability, difficulty concentrating or repeated reassurance-seeking. Others start avoiding travel, crowds, meetings, exams, social situations or places where they once had a panic attack. A psychiatric assessment can help identify whether symptoms fit generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, OCD, trauma-related anxiety, depression or a physical health condition.
Common anxiety symptoms patients search for
Symptoms can vary, but common searches such as “why is my heart racing?”, “why can’t I stop overthinking?”, “panic attack treatment Nepal” and “anxiety and insomnia” often describe a similar pattern. Emotional symptoms can include excessive worry, dread, irritability, fear of losing control and difficulty relaxing. Physical symptoms can include palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, chest tightness and disturbed sleep.
These symptoms are real and distressing. They should not simply be dismissed as weakness. At the same time, chest pain, fainting, new severe breathlessness or symptoms that could be a medical emergency need urgent medical assessment rather than an assumption that they are “only anxiety.”
Panic attacks: what do they feel like?
A panic attack is a sudden surge of intense fear or discomfort. It may peak within minutes and can include a pounding heart, shaking, sweating, breathlessness, choking sensations, chest discomfort, dizziness, tingling, nausea, fear of dying or fear of “going crazy.” The experience can feel dangerous even when it is not causing permanent harm.
After a first attack, people may worry about another one and avoid situations they associate with panic. This fear-and-avoidance cycle is treatable. A clinician may first consider medical causes and then discuss education, breathing and grounding skills, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), gradual exposure and medication when clinically appropriate.
How is anxiety treated in Nepal?
There is no one treatment that is right for everyone. Treatment begins with understanding your symptoms, triggers, sleep, physical health, medicines, caffeine or substance use, stressors and the ways anxiety is affecting your life. For mild or situational anxiety, practical counselling, sleep support, reducing excess caffeine, routine changes and coping skills may be enough.
For persistent or more severe anxiety, CBT is one of the most useful psychological treatments. It helps people notice unhelpful thought patterns, reduce avoidance and practise new responses. Exposure-based therapy can be particularly helpful for phobias, panic and social anxiety. Medication may be considered when symptoms are moderate to severe, recurring, or not improving with therapy alone. A psychiatrist should explain likely benefits, possible side effects, alternatives and the follow-up plan before medication is started.
Can anxiety be cured without medication?
Some people recover or improve greatly with therapy, counselling, practical changes and time, without medication. Others benefit from a combination of therapy and medication. The useful question is not whether medication is “good” or “bad,” but what is most likely to help you function and recover safely at this point. Medication is never the only part of care, and it should be reviewed rather than continued automatically.
Do not stop a prescribed psychiatric medicine suddenly without discussing it with the prescriber. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, taking other medicines or having troublesome side effects, raise this at the appointment so treatment can be planned safely.
When should I see a psychiatrist for anxiety?
Book a consultation if anxiety has lasted two weeks or more, is worsening, causes panic attacks, disrupts sleep, leads to avoidance, affects work or study, or occurs alongside low mood, alcohol or drug use, OCD symptoms or thoughts of self-harm. You can also seek help earlier; you do not need to wait until symptoms become severe.
If you feel unable to stay safe, have thoughts of harming yourself or another person, are severely confused, or have urgent physical symptoms, seek immediate help from the nearest emergency department or local emergency services. Do not wait for an online appointment in an emergency.
Online anxiety consultation in Nepal
Online psychiatric consultation can be a practical option for many people in Nepal, especially for follow-up visits, medication review, psychoeducation and selected initial assessments. It may be useful if you live outside Kathmandu, have work or caregiving responsibilities, or find travel difficult. Choose a quiet, private place for the appointment and keep your current medicines and questions nearby.
Some situations need in-person assessment instead, including immediate safety risks, severe confusion, serious withdrawal symptoms or urgent medical concerns. The clinic can help advise whether online or in-person consultation is the appropriate first step.
